Monday 10th November 2014
The has turned chilly. It is now 17.6c and to us it is very cold.
Sunday 19th October 2014
Lovely sunny day today. At the time of writing this the temperature has reached 28c. This Morning Caroline trimmed Stars feet whilst I gave Mac a good groom.
Saturday 18th October 2014
Today we had a day off.
Friday 17th October 2014
This year it looks as if we are going to get a bumper harvest of acorns. The horses love them as we do as well. The acorns we have on our land are edible. We are also going to grow a large number of oak trees from this years crop of acorns.
Thursday 16th October 2014
Today we buried the cables running from the solar panels to the control box in the marquee.
Wednesday 15th October 2014
Our new vegetable is slowly taking shape. We still have a long way to go.
Tuesday 14th October 2014
We finally managed to finish off putting in the remainder of the storm straps on the marquee. There are around 43 straps and ground anchors holding it down.
Monday 13th October 2014
Working on a section of road.
Sunday 12th October 2014
For some reason people are drawn to this Oak Tree, including the horses.
Saturday 11th October 2014
So the rain is pouring down and I am playing catch up with regards to computer work. I have the outline for a new book which I hope to start writing in the next few days.
Friday 10th October 2014
Fernando went off to explore Ourique and picked up a couple of new spark plugs whilst he was there for the generators. I spent the later part of the afternoon and early evening cooking.
Thursday 9th October 2014
Today we took apart one of the generators and replaced the the pull cord. Whilst we had the machine apart we gave a thorough clean and a service.
Wednesday 8th October 2014
Put in the electrics for a light over the dinning table in the second marquee. So tonight we had dinner with proper lighting.
Tuesday 7th October 2014
Today work was started on the new pitch. Even though it looks relatively flat the the drop from top to bottom is a surprising half metre.
Monday 6th October 2014
Today we went to Ourique and did a large shop for food and supplies. We also ordered another 100 metres of bungee.
Sunday 5th October 2014
Checked on the guest caravan as we have a new volunteer arriving this evening.
Saturday 4th October 2014
Today we had a production line going again making up 100's of new bungee ties to replace all of the old over stretched ones holding the panels and the roofs.
We worked out that as the bungees had been in store for three years and god only knows as to how long ago they been manufactured the rubber had deteriorated.
Friday 3rd October 2014
We made up 100's of bungees to replace the old ones
Thursday 2nd October 2014
Today I went off to Ourique to see if the 100 metres of I had ordered had arrived. My luck was in.
Wednesday 1st October 2014
Today we changed a leaking hose on the washing machine. Taking the machine apart took the longest amount of time.
Tuesday 30th September 2014
Back into the hot summer weather tomorrow, 31c plus.
Today I put up a 12v light in one of the marquees so we can see what we are doing when preparing the feed for the horses and dogs for when it becomes darker as winter approaches.
Monday 29th September 2014
This the amount of food our horses get. This amount is for two horses. All it is is Pre Alpen which is Austrian grass. It comes in compressed pelts and is reconstituted by adding water. We do not need to feed our horses at all as they get everything they need from the land. So why do we feed them a little morsel? It serves two purposes. The first is that they touch base about once a day so we can see that they are alright, and secondly if we have give them any medication we can put into the feed.
Sunday 28th September 2014
Today we had a chill out day, and why not.
Saturday 27th September 2014
Today I topped up the large water tank and gave the spare caravan a very quick clean. Well that is all that it needed as Laura left it absolutely spotless.
Friday 26th September 2014
Today we went to Castro Verde to visit the dentist. Our friend Gun came over to look after the animals. On our return we had a lazy lunch so nothing much was done other than spending about an hour with the horses. Caroline did a little trimming on Macs feet and I did some more bonding.
Thursday 25th September 2014
Today I ventured out to Ourique to collect the 100 metres of bungee and a package from the cafe for Caroline. Well there was no package and the bungee had still not arrived. I was told next week. Well we shall see.
Wednesday 24th September 2014
Service of the generator is complete for another 80 hours.
We have two Honda EU2000i generators. Probably one of the best generators
in the world. Quite, reliable, and easy to maintain. We use the generators
for the washing machine, the bore hole pump, and anywhere else we need to
have power on the land. The main purpose is for use as a back up supply to
the solar system we have installed.

Today I will be servicing one of the two generators we have. It is a job that needs to be done every eighty hours of running time.
We have got blue skies and the sun is shinning and it is nearly 24c. I just love this place. Get up in the morning have a coffee and not have to bother about what one is going to wear. To be able to go outside and feel the warm air on your skin is just fantastic.
Besides not getting hot and sticky, there is also the eco factor as there are no dirty clothes to wash. I wonder how many wash loads we have saved on by being clothes free for most of the time? Interesting question. We probably use our washing machine a couple of times a month and that is to wash towels, bed linen and the odd bit of clothing. We do wear clothes when it is chilly or when we go out.

Tuesday 23rd September 2014
Today we had a mixed bag of weather and a huge amount of rain in the afternoon. We are still working out the drainage on the new pitch we are on.
Monday 22nd September 2014
Today I was by the lake to see what work needed to be done there, when I decided to go for a swim. All I had to do was walk straight into the lake. When I came out I just carried on with what I was doing. No need towels. Non of this having to take off your clothes and then having to put them on again.
Sunday 21st September 2014
Strange day. We had some amazing weather. Sun, thunderstorm, rainbow followed by an amazing sunset. I managed to do a little training with Mac.
Besides that I filled the water tank, a job I do about once week. Our water comes from a bore hole and it is pumped into a tank which is then gravity fed to supply all of our needs.
Saturday 20th September 2014
Today we had a potter day and sent some time with the horses. I managed to do a little more training with Mac and came very close to slipping onto his back..
Friday 19th September 2014
Had to venture out once more this week. This time it was to go to the hardware store in Ourique to pick up the 100 metres of bungee that I had ordered so that we can replace the bungees that have perished. The bungee had not arrived so we now have to wait until Wednesday.
Thursday 18th September 2014
Today we had a mixed bag of weather. A lot of sun and rain at the same time.
Wednesday 17th September 2014
So today I had to put on some clothes and venture out into the big world. I had to go to the Algarve, about a 40 minute drive from us, to pick up a shipment from the UK which we had arrived at a transport company. We had ordered special straps to tie down the marquees, an inverter, [pure sign wave], and a load of ground anchors.
I hate going to the Algarve as it is full of traffic and thousands of people.
Tuesday 16th September 2014
Originally this was going to be a storage hut, washing machine room. Things
have changed and now it will become either a bathroom, chill out room or a
bedroom. The jury is still out on this one. It is being built from mud with
grass and stone. All the materials used are from the land and recycled

Monday 15th September 2014
Spent the day catching up with paper work and house cleaning.
Sunday 14th September 2014
This morning I went and topped up our water tank. We pump our water from our bore hole which goes down 140 metres to ensure we never run out of water. The water is pumped from the bore hole up to a tank which we installed and then that feeds everything by gravity.
Three people, three dogs, washing up, cooking, showers, use around 200 litres in three day. That is around 66 litres of water per day. How much do you use?
In the early days before we had the bore hole the water had to be collected from a water source on our land which was around 1.5 kilometres away.

Saturday 13th September 2014
So I had the best intentions in the world and was going to take some pictures only to find that the battery in the camera was dead. So tomorrow is another day.
Friday 12th September 2014
Like all great plans things change. Landed up going to Ourique and doing a big food shop and then going the hardware shop to order 100 metres of elastic for making up bungees for the marquee. Plus I got fuel for the generator and did the recycling. So the pictures will have to wait. .
Thursday 11th September 2014
Still ironing out little bugs on the site. Getting there slowly but surely.
Wednesday 10th September 2014
Concentrated on finishing the revamp of the website.
